Overtaken by Huawei, iPhone falls to third in global smartphone market share in Q1

On Tuesday, a study from market researcher Gartner confirmed one thing once again: Apple has lost its place in the global smartphone market to Huawei.

Gartner's report shows that in the first quarter of 2019, the iPhone's share of the global smartphone market has fallen to 11.91 TP3T, down 2.21 TP3T year-on-year, and sales have fallen from 54.1 million units in the first quarter of 2018 to about 44.6 million units.

In this regard, Anshul Gupta, head of research at the organization, wrote in a report that the iPhone's price-cutting strategy in various markets, while boosting demand, was still not enough to restore growth in the first quarter:

"Apple faces longer replacement cycles as users struggle to see enough value benefits to justify replacing their current iPhone."

On the other hand, unlike Apple's weak sales, Huawei sold 58.4 million smartphones in the first quarter of this year and saw its market share rise to 15.71 TP3T from 10.51 TP3T in the same period last year.

According to Gartner, Huawei has not only surpassed Apple, but is also gradually closing the gap with top-ranked Samsung, and this is also consistent with the findings of the IDC Data Research Center earlier this month.

While Samsung is still the industry leader by the numbers, its market share has dropped from 20.5% to 19.2% , with sales of smartphones totaling 71.6 million units in the first quarter.

Huawei, on the other hand, achieved the highest year-on-year sales growth rate among the world's top five cell phone suppliers. It performed particularly well in its two largest markets, Europe and Greater China, where smartphone sales grew by 691 TP3T and 331 TP3T, respectively.

An article in Business Wire, a US-based business information website, has pointed out that the growth of Huawei's cell phone business in China, Western Europe, and Africa has contributed to its increasing market share, catching up with Samsung.

Meanwhile, other Chinese smartphone makers also performed well. OPPO's smartphone market share rose to 7.9% from 7.3%, and Vivo's smartphone market share rose to 7.3% from 6.1%, placing them in the fourth and fifth positions respectively in Gartner's global cell phone sales rankings for the first quarter.
